BB PRESS Reviews in Detail
San Diego Reader - Hometown CDs - Brain Buckit - By Mary Montgomery
"They say the grass is always greener, so how come you don't like mine?" asks funk rock fivesome Brain Buckit on their ambitious CD. Out of the eleven songs, there are three that really shine: "Sweet Tequila," "Crosstown Traffic," and "Rocket Science." The four guys and a gal render a tight mix of jazzy rock that's occasionally punked out with ska horns. Guitarist Chris Kelly provides Hendrix-inspired fills. Brain Buckit's willingness to experiment with their sound is admirable.
"Sweet Tequila" has the memorable "Tequila tastes sweet on lips that smile,". "Rocket Science" features the line, "I never raised no chickens, but I know that they can't fly," before a well-played sax solo by Amy Stickney. This song is a standout. There is plenty of talent in this group and it’s prophetically reflected in their song "I Know What I Know."
"Walkin' out the other day, when love really came my way, but then it stopped, reversed, and turned away, went on back from where it came." I kind of know how they feel.

AndyB of TIPSY V PRESENTS!
Freakiest Halloween Jamz EVER! Friday night @ Riddles in review:
BRAIN BUCKIT, rocked out the closing set and threw a self-contained energetic party on stage. A dancing horn section of slip-slide trombone from Kentucky, soulful-sax from Nebraska, and NJ's own current Brain-resident Dave Roman joining them on his off time from Buddha Brains as well! And who could forget the rhythm section, Chad on drums & Andrew on Bass, centered around Chris Kelly (lead vox/guitar)...all three being fine products of "San Diego via NJ". I've come to find out that Hank the Angry Dwarf does not appear on their web site, yet I've been gently enlightened as to the importance of wearing a Buckit on your Brain when traveling the intergalactic sonic speedway. It's nothing like the Parkway OR the Turnpike...I hope to see more of them this fine winter, as well as some new bands and many surprises in store to keep your musical heart-n-soul warm!!
PB Block Party Go ahead, blame Chris Kelly...the local guitarist-singer-songwriter-and-open mic host...for the name. It may not be his idea, but it probably is. Best not to ask too many questions here. Like the neo-blues roadhouse funk they like to riff on (The Meters, Taj Mahal, Hendrix), the overallu underbelly feeling of BB's back alley grooves is probably left unspoken. Just show up, turn off your temporal lobe and listen to your loins. Kelly, Chad Matthew, Aquiliano Soriano and Amy Stickney won't say a word about what you do next.

Brain Buckit @ ZEBRA Fri.,Oct 01, 04, 10:00 pm
The funky jams and rock and roll are back and the party's getting bigger. Not only has BRAIN BUCKIT consistently been expanding their fan base across the country, but the band is growing as well. "While we were playing in Denver this summer," says guitarist Chris Kelly "these local horn players, Rob and Corey sat in with us. My hair stood on end! This is the sound we've been looking for. Adding two more horns to Amy's sax gives us a cool New Orleans funk sound. Mix that with our high energy rockin and rollin and it's a party that's tough to beat. It's like AC/DC goes to Mardis Gras!" "We are more excited than ever about the band," adds drummer Chad Brienza. "It's our third trip to Bozeman where the turn outs and the vibe have been great. The Zebra should be tons of fun." The show is presented locally by Dave's Sushi and Bozone Brewing Co.

Underground Sounds -- by Tommy Anderson Brain Buckit --
This San Diego based band is on to something good with a tight, upbeat sound and an eclectic mix of styles ranging from funk to rock with even some jazz and ska thrown in for good measure. Their influences are easy to hear. Traces of Hendrix, The Meters, Phish, and Taj Mahal all poke their heads out at various times. The transitions are smooth and the jams build solidly. The band is made up of: Chris Kelly on guitar and vocals, Chris Matthew on the drums, Aguilino Soriano on the bass, and Amy Stickney on the saxophone. Don't miss this high-energy band. BRAIN BUCKIT RETURNS TO BOZEMAN The San Diego band BRAIN BUCKIT is returning to do a night at the Zebra on Fri., March 12. The night is being sponsored locally by Dave’s Sushi and Bozeman Brewing Company. Those who attended last summer’s “Whitewater Festival/ American Wildlands Gallatin River Celebration” or caught their show at the Filler will remember these guys are all about funky jams and high-energy Rock N’ Roll. Since their last visit, their song “Let It Snow!” has received radio airplay across the country. Their music is being placed in films and TV and drawing attention from record companies nation wide. BRAIN BUCKIT, while consistently grooving, will dabble in many styles from around the world and the vibe is always positive. “Our songs are about three things,” says guitarist Chris Kelly ”lovin’ life, ladies and lovin’ life!” Their improvisational skill makes them a jam band delight but their song writing is what will get them noticed. BB Music Reviews

Top stuff!!     Highly recommended to buy the CD and also listen to them playing.
The CD is a fusion of many styles but it’s mainly funk rock with the brass section taking a prominent part in proceedings. The guitar playing is excellent too, especially on the brilliant "Baja Taxi." This is a great track which has been used on some surfer films but could quite easily be a part of a Tarantino soundtrack. The rest of the tracks are mainly uptempo and there is even a cover of Hendrix’s "Crosstown Traffic" which has their own individual slant to it. This CD has most things including the blues with "Rocket Science." There are some slower tracks on this album as well which are good but the main attraction to me is the rhythm which has my toes tapping and my head nodding.

Change nothing and continue with immaculate consistency.

Brain Buckit is a jamband through-and-through, filled with quasi-funky guitars, horn lines, snapping beats, and (most significantly) pure playfulness. Brain Buckit is an 88-mph DeLorean ride to the Great Northeast Jam Scare of '95.
There is no angst here. Far from it. Beginning with an upbeat number titled "Passion Fruit (Go Bananas!)", proceeding through a few semi-cinematic instrumentals (including "Run Rabbit/The Chase" and "Baja Taxi"), a cover of Hendrix's "Cross Town Traffic" , and an as-it-sounds closer called "Let the Boogie Loose."

Music Review: BRAIN BUCKIT
I welcome it and so will you.

By www.smother.net/reviews

I guess what’s most interesting about Brain Buckit is their inconsistency. But it’s actually a good thing. They flip styles like pancakes ranging from delta swamp blues to ska to psychedelica to jam band funk to surf rock. But they do it with their own style transferring without making it sound forced and certainly keeping a common theme throughout. Bizarre? Yes. But I welcome it and so will you.

Well suited and very upbeat!!! Sounds like a wonderful fusion with bits of Latino, Asian, reggae and other cultural influences. All good stuff.

Music Review: BRAIN BUCKIT
By Beverly Durfee

Many of the bands I choose to review send me a bit of mail with their CD submission, and they often suggest three or four songs as “must-hear” if I don’t have time to listen to the whole CD. Not BRAIN BUCKIT. These hot rockers let me know that each song is so stylistically varied I won’t get it if I don’t hear it all.

Beside being self-assured, BRAIN BUCKIT is absolutely right. From “Passion Fruit (Go Bananas)” to “Let The Boogie Loose” I can only relate to you that the band is truly the “Funky Jam Rock” group they claim to be.

Don’t believe me? Good. You’re in luck because BRAIN BUCKIT just happens to be making a swing through Colorado. I mean ain’t this fate or something? You can catch the band at Dulcinea’s in Denver on July 21, the next night at Cactus Jack’s in Evergreen and the 23rd at The Ancient Mariner in Manitou Springs.

I have to admit, the band seems so instrumentally rich and layered, it’s hard to imagine this level of sound coming through live. If any of you have the chance to hear them, please let me know how they translate on the road.

My favorites on this listening were “Sweet Tequila” (mellow groove), “Baja Taxi” (flamenco surf), “Rocket Science” (Delta swamp - and sure to bring on a smile) and the sincere and brooding “Leavin’ Tonight” (Psycha-delta). Thanks to all you BRAIN BUCKITs for the funky-cool tunes.
